Over 39 million people visited Las Vegas last year.  They come from all over the world and many have decided to settle here.  The constant flow of visitors has led to multiple pockets of ethnic communities which have really enriched the people and cuisine in this town.

I am a relative newcomer to Las Vegas having lived here for just over a year, but let me tell you I love this town.  At any moment, I can step out and taste cuisines from all over because as they say, the world is right at my fingertips!

A friend and I decided to try lunch at Stephano’s Greek and Mediterranean Grill, which is located next to UNLV.  It is a no frills student friendly cafe with plenty of seating and if you arrive early enough, you may just be able to snag a spot in their comfy and cozy corner which has booths packed with plush throw pillows!

Order at the counter, seat yourself and an electronic table buzzer lets you know when your order’s ready.  It is fast, efficient service and I like it that you can see the cooks doing their magic behind the counter.

We start with the falafel platter ($10.92).  All the platters come with humus, Israeli salad and two pieces of pita bread and you get a choice of regular or whole wheat pita.  The Israeli salad is a chopped salad of finely diced tomatoes and cucumber in an olive oil and lemon juice dressing.

It is refreshing, delicious and a perfect accompaniment to the meal.  The falafels are crunchy and well seasoned and I especially love that they are bite sized.

We also order a small side of the humus ($2.95) and french fries ($2.49).  Humus is cooked and mashed chickpeas which is blended with garlic and tahini (ground sesame seeds) to create a smooth and creamy spread or dip.

The french fries come with their own secret fry sauce and after you taste it, you will understand why this information is classified!

Our second entrée is the chicken schwarma platter ($10.92).  Chicken schwarma is marinated and spiced slices of chicken which are usually stacked on a spit and grilled over an open fire.  The chicken schwarma is lean, tasty and delicious and ideal for eating as wraps with the warm pita bread.

Our last entrée is the beef and lamb gyro($10.92) which is served with onions, tomatoes and a tzatziki or yogurt sauce.  The beef and lamb gyro here is tender, moist and flavorful and certainly do not disappoint.

Call me crazy but I love almost all meats cooked on a spit.  I love the history, concept and taste of meat roasting slowly over a fire, the heightened anticipation of a communal meal, the joys and celebration which follow a feast well prepared and enjoyed together.

We end the meal with baklava ($0.99) which Stephano’s cleverly and conveniently sells in bite sized servings!  All in all, a pretty good outing and another great discovery especially as they are on Groupon this month so hurry and get this deal.   Your budget, tummy and taste buds will thank me!
